Anita Earls has been an associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court since January 2019 and is its senior associate justice23. She was a civil rights lawyer who founded the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, directed the UNC Center for Civil Rights and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights voting rights project, and served as a deputy assistant attorney general in the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division23. She faces Republican Sarah Stevens on November 3, 2026 in this partisan race13.

- In August 2023 the Judicial Standards Commission was investigating comments she made to the legal news site Law360 about diversity and implicit bias in the state courts; she sued the commission in federal court on August 29, 2023, arguing the inquiry violated her free speech rights6.
- The commission dismissed the complaint in January 2024 without any discipline, and she then dropped her lawsuit7.
- Announced her reelection campaign on October 22, 2024, and disclosed an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis in January 2026 while saying she would continue the campaign4.
